bobHave you ever tried to write one of these things? An introspective type person I am not! Probably the best way to approach this is a simple list of some facts of my life.

I attended a parochial grammar school and High School and getting fairly good grades was pretty easy for me. I started college thinking of a career in Chemistry but soon decided that a lab setting for the rest of my life was not something I thought of as a good thing. So I gave school one year and then went to work. After a couple years at US Steel working with my father, I went into a carpentry apprenticeship program. I had been wood carving and making small cabinetry for a few years by then and loved it but looked at working in a cabinet shop the same as I looked at a chemistry lab … too confining.

Four years later found me married for a year, owning a home, going self-employed even before finishing the apprenticeship program and getting my journeyman’s card. Also found me winning the Chicago area apprenticeship competition which sent me to the state competition where winning then sent me to the national competition. It was a great experience where I had a great time and learned a very valuable lesson. Do you know how extremely easy it is to make a very stupid mistake when you get overconfident and lose your concentration? I do!

It is now 38 years later. I find myself still married to the same woman, whom I still adore, with a 35 yr old son that I can’t really complain too much about.

Almost three years ago I bought my own birthday present and rekindled an old love, wood turning on a lathe. New materials and new projects brought back the old feelings of fun and satisfaction I always received when working with my hands on new projects. Using new types of tools, new types of wood and new types of materials is exciting. That brings me to Treespun.

My son Rob,  the technical one in the family, brought up the idea of creating a website so I could sell my wood turned creations.  Thus treespun.com was born.  While I work hard out in my shop he works on improving the website, taking care of orders, and customer service.
